Why is my shutter count not showing?

A blank count can mean the file lacks a counter, the file type is not accepted, or the deeper reader has not finished. Start with the message on screen, then take the next useful step.

Match the symptom to the next check

What you seeWhat it meansNext step
File rejected before analysisThe extension or validation failed.Compare the actual file type with accepted formats. Renaming .ARW to .NEF does not convert it.
Camera settings appear, but no countThe fast reader decoded ordinary metadata without finding a recognized counter.Choose Check shutter count when offered and let the deep reader finish.
The reader is downloadingThe optional processing software is still loading.Watch the progress indicator and keep the tab open. A first uncached download is about 25.3 MB.
Deep analysis completes, but no count appearsNo qualifying counter was decoded from this file.Try another original accepted file or a model-specific camera method.
Deep reader unavailable or an errorThe deeper check did not complete.Keep the fast results; retry in a current desktop browser with fewer open tabs. Do not interpret a failed run as evidence of absent metadata.

Ordinary EXIF and MakerNotes are different

Make, model, ISO, aperture, and exposure time can survive in a file even when camera-specific MakerNotes are missing or unreadable. Seeing dozens of camera settings does not establish that a shutter counter must be present. Our fast scan and optional deep scan have different decoding capabilities.

The D2H case study shows the useful case: a named Nikon:ShutterCount of 4,350. In contrast, the identified D100 sample in our research evidence parsed without a strong or possible counter. Both outcomes are legitimate file-reading results.

Check how the file reached you

Ask whether the file came directly from the memory card or passed through an editor, messaging service, marketplace, or social network. A displayed photo can look identical after its metadata has changed. File size, appearance, and the presence of a capture date cannot prove that MakerNotes were preserved.

  1. Find the original camera file or ask its owner to transfer it as an unchanged file attachment.
  2. For Nikon, request the original NEF and its matching camera JPEG where available.
  3. Preserve both originals. Do not open and re-export them as a troubleshooting step.
  4. Run the accepted original in the checker. If only an edited copy is available, describe its count as unavailable rather than estimating it.

A file extension is not a compatibility guarantee

The public checker accepts jpg jpeg nef tif tiff dng heic heif avif. Model, metadata layout, and browser behavior still affect the outcome. Research results for ARW, PEF, CR2, CR3, RAF, ORF, and RW2 do not enable those formats in the public checker.

Converting an unsupported RAW into DNG or JPEG may discard or transform proprietary information. Conversion can make a picture viewable without making its shutter counter recoverable. Keep the original for a suitable model-specific method.

Check completion before diagnosing the camera

The optional reader downloads executable application assets; it does not upload the selected image. A blocked request or a browser running out of memory can stop the analysis. Repeating the check on a desktop can help distinguish a device limit from a file-specific problem, but successful desktop processing does not guarantee the same result on a phone.

If the tab closes or reloads, select the file again. Keep the original saved locally. Do not disable browser security protections or send a private RAW to an unfamiliar service just to obtain a number.

When a photo-based method is the wrong method

Some cameras expose useful counters through camera menus, direct camera communication, or service diagnostics rather than a readable photo field. See our Canon methods guide and Olympus/OM System diagnostic-menu guide. Follow the exact model instructions; a sequence for one family may not apply to another.

What to report when you need help

Send the model, extension, browser and operating system, displayed application version, and whether the failure happened during file selection, fast analysis, download, or deep analysis. Include the exact on-screen error. Omit full serials, GPS, owner names, and complete metadata exports. For a public research sample, its source record and hash are enough to identify it.

A missing count does not mean zero use, a defective camera, or a dishonest seller. For a purchase, continue with physical inspection and transaction checks.
